Likely, you’ve seen a set of acrylic fingernails before. They can make even the shortest, thinnest nails look perfect. Dental Veneers are like acrylic nails because they both cover your natural tooth or nail for a more polished look. If you are self-conscious about the way your natural teeth look, dental veneers could make your dream smile a reality.
Who Needs Veneers
Dental veneers are a wonderful solution for those who want a perfect smile, and currently struggle with stains or discoloration. They also greatly benefit those who would like a more perfect all-around shape of their smile, and have chips or small gaps.
What are Dental Veneers Made of?
Dental veneers can be made of either composite resin or porcelain. While porcelain is the stronger material, it can’t be mended if broken. Composite resin, on the other hand, is made of filling materials and can be easily fixed if cracked or damaged. Porcelain is the closer match to your natural teeth, and extremely stain-resistant, so it will cost a little more than the composite resin option.
How Are They Prepared?
In your initial visit, your Merced dentist will assess your smile to make sure it is ready for veneers. They will take care of any gingivitis or cavities first. If there are no issues to be addressed, we will prepare your smile by scraping off the top-most layer of enamel from your teeth. This is typically only a half-millimeter or less. Any discomfort you may feel during the preparation process should be offset by local anesthetic. After your teeth are filed, we will take an impression of them, either digitally or with dental putty. We will send your impression to a dental laboratory where they can begin fabricating your custom smile. Your custom dental veneers will also be matched to the color of the surrounding teeth, for a look that’s as natural as possible.
How Long Will it Take?
The entire veneer process will take at least two visits to your Merced Cosmetic dentist. During your first visit, your teeth will be assessed and prepared for your veneers. During your second visit, they will be fitted and cemented.
If you need any adjustments made, we are able to make minor adjustments only. We highly suggest that you wait at least a few days after getting them fitted so that you can get used to them before coming in for a third visit.
How Long do Dental Veneers Last?
If you take good care of your dental veneers, they should last a few years. Ask your Merced cosmetic dentist about how to prevent chips, cracks, and breaks in your new dental veneers.
The Pros
Dental veneers can greatly benefit those who have been drinking coffee or smoking cigarettes over a long period of time. They are more stain-resistant than your natural teeth, so they may stay brighter for longer. Any stains or discoloration can be covered. They can also fill in small gaps or chips, for an overall more pleasantly shaped smile.
They can also make your teeth stronger if years of exposure to enamel-corroding foods has left your teeth vulnerable to temperature- and pressure-sensitivity.
The Cons
Getting dental veneers is an invasive and irreversible process. The enamel we remove during the preparation is not able to be replaced. Consider that by removing a layer of enamel, your natural teeth are thinner, and you may become more sensitive to temperature or pressure.
